The Virginia Tech College of Science has named Patricia Hammer as its assistant dean for administration and analytics, a new role that will provide leadership for critical administrative and analytics efforts, including planning for key college infrastructure and long-range financial and operational forecasting.

Hammer previously was at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia, for nearly 30 years. Most recently, she served as vice president for academic affairs. At Hollins, she also served as dean of academic services from 2009 to 2013 and was a professor of mathematics. She also twice served as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, from 1997 to 2000 and 2004 to 2008, respectively.

Hammer is a three-time Hokie alumna, earning her bachelor’s degree in 1983, a master’s degree in 1984, and a Ph.D. in 1990, all from the Department of Mathematics, part of the College of Science.

In her role, Hammer will be responsible for long-range financial and operational forecasting, including evaluating the implications of the new partnership for incentive-based budget for the college, creation and implementation of various department-level performance metrics, and implementation and execution of an annual departmental review process, and keep college leaders apprised of significant operations.

“We’re delighted to welcome Trish home to Virginia Tech and the College of Science,” said Sally C. Morton, dean of the College of Science. “As the previous provost at Hollins University, Trish brings a breadth of experience in higher education, and her data science skills will help us build a strong strategy during this exciting time of growth.”

Away from work, Hammer described herself as a passionate reader, paddle boarder, shopper, sailor, dog walker, and teller of bad math jokes.
