With acrobatic movement, humor, and heart, Pilobolus brings adventure to the stage
They have performed on Broadway, at the Oscars, and at the Olympics. Now, dance theatre company Pilobolus brings their new show “Shadowland: The New Adventure” to the Moss Arts Center on May 11 at 7:30 p.m.
The performance will be held in the center’s Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.
“Shadowland: The New Adventure” uses exploration of mixed media to tell a love story about two people and their quixotic quest to save an imaginary bird. Developed in collaboration with “SpongeBob SquarePants” lead writer Steven Banks, the production uses animation, video, and shadow-theatre for an adventure that dips its toes into the genres of science fiction, film noir, and romantic comedy.
With Pilobolus’s acrobatic movement, the humor of cartoons, and the heart of a love story, “Shadowland” celebrates the power of dreams and self-discovery. While the production has toured the world, it has rarely been seen in the U.S., making this a special treat for Blacksburg.
In the 47 years since its beginnings as a dance class assignment at Dartmouth College, Pilobolus has tested the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and the power of connected bodies. The ensemble has created and toured over 120 dance works in more than 65 countries and currently performs for more than 300,000 people across the U.S. and around the world each year.
Pilobolus has been featured on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” NBC’s “TODAY Show,” and MTV’s “Video Music Awards,” and has received a TED Fellowship, a 2012 Grammy nomination, a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Programming, and several Cannes Lion Awards at the International Festival of Creativity. In 2015 Pilobolus was named one of Dance Heritage Coalition’s “Irreplaceable Dance Treasures.”

Tickets
Tickets are $25-55 for general audience and $10 for students and youth 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased online; at the Moss Arts Center's box office, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; or by calling 540-231-5300 during box office hours.
While Virginia Tech students can always attend any Moss Arts Center performance for only $10, the center also offers free last-minute rush tickets for students who sign up for text notifications. To receive these notifications, text “arts” to 31996. Availability of rush tickets varies by performance and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last in the box office. Virginia Tech ID will be required for admission.
Parking is available in the North End Parking Garage on Turner Street. Virginia Tech faculty and staff possessing a valid Virginia Tech parking permit can enter and exit the garage free of charge. Limited street parking is also available. Parking on Alumni Mall is free on weekdays after 5 p.m. and on weekends.
