See the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet perform during its final North American tour
Discover how the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet has helped redefine the sound of the classic wind quintet when the ensemble performs at the Moss Arts Center on Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the group’s final North American tour.
The performance will be held in the center’s Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.
The first permanently established wind quintet in the famous orchestra’s rich tradition of chamber music, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet was founded in 1988 during the era of Berlin Philharmonic principal conductor Herbert von Karajan. Audiences worldwide have enjoyed the ensemble’s range of expression, tonal spectrum, and conceptual unity.
For its final North American tour, the quintet will perform works spanning the late 19th and 20th centuries from composers Anton Reicha, Paul Hindemith, Henri Tomasi, and Paul Taffanel. Some members of the quintet are retiring, and the group will give only occasional performances in Europe.
The members of the quintet — Michael Hasel, flute; Andreas Wittmann, oboe; Walter Seyfarth, clarinet; Fergus McWilliam, horn; and Marion Reinhard, bassoon — have worked with many of the world’s major conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Carlos Kleiber, John Barbirolli, Günter Wand, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti, James Levine, and Daniel Barenboim.
In addition to its concert appearances throughout Europe, North and South America, Israel, Australia, and the Far East, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet is also a popular guest at international festivals, such as the Berliner Festwochen, Edinburgh Festival, London Proms, Quintette-Biennale Marseille, Rheingau Festival, and Salzburg Festival. The ensemble’s television and radio broadcasts are seen and heard throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The quintet also provides chamber music workshops and instrumental instruction in many countries. For example, the ensemble has worked extensively with the youth orchestra program of Venezuela.

While visiting Virginia Tech, members of the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet will conduct a master class with Virginia Tech music students that will be open to the public on Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Moss Arts Center. The event is free, but admission is first-come, first-served. To guarantee a seat, register online.
Tickets
Tickets for the performance are $25-55 for general public and $10 for students and youth 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased online; at the Moss Arts Center's box office, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; or by calling 540-231-5300 during box office hours.
While Virginia Tech students can always attend any Moss Arts Center performance for only $10, the center also offers free last minute rush tickets for students who sign up for text notifications. To receive these notifications, text “arts” to 31996. Availability of rush tickets varies by performance and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last in the box office. Virginia Tech ID will be required for admission.
Parking is available in the North End Parking Garage on Turner Street. Virginia Tech faculty and staff possessing a valid Virginia Tech parking permit can enter and exit the garage free of charge. Limited street parking is also available. Parking on Alumni Mall is free on weekdays after 5 p.m. and on weekends.
