Susan Campbell is one of a number of new faculty members recently hired in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences this academic year. New positions were identified to bring talent to the college's focus areas, including food, health, the environment, and community viability. The new faculty members are distributed across teaching, research, and Extension.

Campbell is a neuroscientist who studies epilepsy. The focus of her research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of altered synaptic communication that leads to the development of epilepsy and identify targets that may serve as therapeutic targets for treatment. Her research interest also includes deciphering the role of the gut microbiota in seizure susceptibility in acquired and idiopathic epilepsies. Her laboratory utilizes a variety of methodologies including electrophysiological techniques to probe changes in the function of neuronal circuits, synapses, and synaptic receptors, modern molecular approaches, imaging, and biochemical analyses.

She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and biology from the State University of New York at Binghamton and her doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
