On the Blacksburg campus, the road between Plantation Road and the Smithfield Horse Center is closed due to flooding. Virginia Tech Police are monitoring conditions along Duck Pond Drive.

University officials are monitoring the track of Tropical Storm Michael. According to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Virginia will begin seeing widespread rain Thursday morning with heavier rainfall expected to arrive through both the afternoon and evening hours and continue into early Friday morning across portions of the south and east. Remnants of the storm are tracking a bit farther to the north and are forecast to move through quicker.

Rainfall amounts of four to seven inches across portions of the south and east, two to five inches across the southwest and northeast, and one to two and a half inches throughout the remainder of the commonwealth will be possible. Aside from the rainfall, some gusty winds may occur from later Thursday into Friday throughout Virginia. The further northern track will allow for a period of southeast winds along the Eastern Shore area both Thursday afternoon and evening. This will potentially increase ocean wave heights, especially during the evening hours, and cause beach erosion and coastal flooding. Winds will switch to the northwest by around midnight Friday and the threat for minor coastal flooding in areas on the Chesapeake Bay, which are normally prone to flood, may occur.
