Executive education courses offer insights and tools for business leaders, other professionals
The Pamplin College of Business is launching a series of professional education programs in cybersecurity, integrated security, and entrepreneurship this fall and spring in the metro Washington, D.C., area.
The one-to-two-day courses will be offered at the Executive Briefing Center located in the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington. The courses are aimed at business leaders and other professionals interested in learning new skills and perspectives to keep up with changing technologies, evolving competition, and dynamic market demands.
“Executive education at Pamplin offers programs positioned at the critical intersection of Virginia Tech expertise and the emerging needs of business professionals,” said Kevin Carlson, Pamplin’s associate dean for research and faculty affairs. “I am excited about the menu of high-value programs that have been developed. They fit our mission to provide insights and tools capable of driving immediate improvements in business professionals’ performance, potential for professional growth, or the capacity to better serve their communities.”
The programs are: Cybersecurity Risk Series; Professional Certificate in Analytics, Cybersecurity, and Technology Security; and Unlocking the Entrepreneurial Mindset.
The Cybersecurity Risk Series comprises three courses aimed at providing an understanding of cybersecurity risks and best practices to mitigate such risks for the enterprise.
The Professional Certificate in Analytics, Cybersecurity, and Technology for Meeting and Event Professionals focuses on advancing and assuring the security of events, while balancing the needs and expectations of privacy and government oversight. The certificate requires the completion of five courses, but participants may complete any of four courses in a non-certificate option.
Billed as a “hands-on, minds-on workshop,” Unlocking the Entrepreneurial Mindset will introduce the mindset of successful entrepreneurs as they create an innovative vision, garner resources, and lead others through uncertainty. Participants will learn and leverage entrepreneurial skills to identify opportunities, create value for stakeholders, and manage uncertainties.
The courses may include interactive presentations, invited speakers, case studies, and networking receptions or lunches.
The courses are each aimed at specific audiences, from board members and senior executives and decision-makers to mid-to-upper-level managers and other professionals. The courses are also designed for a specific number of participants, with attendance limited to ensure the optimal learning environment.
The faculty members leading the courses include David Simpson, a Pamplin professor and retired U.S. Navy admiral who previously served as chief of the Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau; Doug Wagoner, a retired SAIC president who currently serves on the boards of Thomson Reuters United States and Terathink and as an advisor to Bain & Company; Kristin Lamoureux, a visiting professor of hospitality and tourism management; Derick Maggard, executive director of Virginia Tech’s Apex Center for Entrepreneurs; and Howard Haines, associate director of the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs.
