Majors Fair to provide students ‘one-stop shop’ for info, options on academic programs
With more than 100 different majors at Virginia Tech, deciding what area to study can be a difficult decision for students.
The 2018 Majors Fair, hosted by Undergraduate Advising and the Student Government Association (SGA), can help students learn more about the university’s program to find the best fit or even to explore a second major.
The Majors Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 26 in Squires Student Center’s Commonwealth Ballroom, and feature information on many of the majors available through academic departments and colleges across the campus. The event provides students with an opportunity to meet with faculty and professional advisors to discuss a variety of possible majors as well as many of the available career opportunities connected to each major.
“This event offers Virginia Tech students a one-stop-shop where they can see all kinds of different options that are available to them,” said Kimberly Smith, assistant provost for academic advising initiatives. “If they are thinking about going into one major but are unsure, or if they are thinking about a couple of different majors, then they can speak with representatives and learn what those majors are really about.”
Smith says that although much of the traffic will be first-year students, all students are welcome and encouraged to attend. Displays, brochures, and pamphlets will provide detailed information to students on specific majors with a range of giveaway items also available at each table.
“The goal of the majors fair is to provide students with a wholistic academic advising experience to include career and major exploration, minors, co-curricular offerings, and other components of the academic experience,” Smith said. “It’s also an opportunity for students to think critically about majors and minors and to ask questions, learn, and think about a major and/or minor that interests them.”
Smith and event organizers hope that students attending the Majors Fair will be able to see that the possibilities for majors and areas of study at Virginia Tech are endless. They also hope students will get closer to achieving their education goals by either confirming their original choice of major or gathering enough information to make an informed decision about choosing other options.
