William “Bill” G. Abplanalp has been named director of management systems and data administration within Virginia Tech’s Division of Operations shared services unit. His new position took effect on May 10.

Abplanalp will provide leadership and oversight for the division’s technology infrastructure, including the development, implementation, administration, and maintenance of policies and procedures that ensure the security and integrity of the division’s data and information technology.

As part of this, he will serve as the division’s liaison to stakeholders throughout the university to communicate and coordinate data-related processes and initiatives, including the collection and maintenance of the university’s space and building data. He will have direct oversight for all units within the management systems and data administration area, including operations information technology, building and space data, enterprise systems, geographical information systems, and the records and plans library.

Abplanalp served most recently as the audit manager within the university’s Office of Audit, Risk, and Compliance. In that role, he was responsible for planning, conducting, and overseeing a variety of projects, including risk-based audit engagements, compliance reviews, and special projects.

Abplanalp has had an accomplished 15-year career in audit, information technology security, consultative services, and information assurance. Prior to joining Virginia Tech in 2014, he worked three years at Radford University, serving as the information security officer managing the day-to-day operations of the information technology security office.

He began his audit career at KPMG, served as a consultant at BearingPoint, began the information technology audit function for Radford’s internal audit department, and worked at Deloitte & Touche before returning to Radford University.

Abplanalp holds a bachelor of science in management science and information technology and a master of business administration, both from Virginia Tech.
