Robert Broadwater honored with emeritus status
Robert Broadwater, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the university community since 1989, Broadwater was the principal or co-principal investigator on grants and contracts exceeding $5.2 million. His research examined a new approach of analysis that he developed, known as Graph Trace Analysis, that is used today by utility companies, universities, and the Department of Defense to study electric power system problems involving transmission, substations, and electric power distribution, all in the same model. It has led to the growth of renewable generation and the implementation of electric power system automation.
Broadwater co-authored chapters in three books, “Real Time Control of Distributed Generation," “Power Distribution,” and "Load Control Experiment.”
In the classroom, Broadwater taught both undergraduate and graduate courses. He directed 28 doctoral students and more than 40 master’s degree students. He also served on more than 100 master’s degree and doctoral degree committees.
Broadwater received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.
