Natalia Henao-Guerrero, associate professor of anesthesiology in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, has been named interim head of the college’s Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, effective Nov. 1.

The appointment follows department head Gregory Daniel’s appointment as the veterinary college’s interim dean.

“We are pleased to have Natalia serve in this vital leadership role,” said Greg Daniel, interim dean of the veterinary college. “She has done an exemplary job in her leadership of anesthesia and she has proven herself as a dedicated clinician and educator. I am confident that the department will continue to excel under her leadership as interim department head.”

A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 2007, Guerrero is an associate professor of anesthesiology in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences and has served as associate head of the department since July 1. Before coming to Virginia Tech, she completed a residency in anesthesiology at the Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in Manhattan.

A veterinary anesthesiologist and diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, her teaching, research, and clinical service focus on anesthesia and pain management. She has published 37 peer-reviewed articles.

Guerrero received a doctorate of veterinary medicine from Universidad de La Salle in Colombia and a master’s degree in veterinary surgery from São Paulo State University in Brazil in 2000 and 2003, respectively.
