The Tallis Scholars honor the sacred sounds of the Renaissance with an a capella vocal performance
Ten a cappella voices will fill the Moss Arts Center’s theatre with the opulent sounds of sacred Renaissance music when British vocal music ensemble The Tallis Scholars performs on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
The performance will be held in the center’s Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.
With over 40 years of performance experience and an extensive catalog of award-winning recordings, The Tallis Scholars has established sacred vocal sounds of the Renaissance period as one of the great repertories of Western classical music.
The ensemble has introduced Renaissance works to a wider audience in churches, cathedrals, and venues on almost every continent, including the Royal Albert Hall, Lincoln Center, and Sydney Opera House, as well as Carnegie Hall, Saint Mark's Basilica in Venice, and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. Career highlights include tours of China in 1999 and 2014 and a special performance in the Sistine Chapel in 1994 to mark the final stage of the complete restoration of the Michelangelo frescoes.
This year marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Renaissance composer Heinrich Isaac. This performance by The Tallis Scholars celebrates the legacy of Isaac, who was one of the leading and most prolific composers of polyphonic vocal music in the late 15th century, renowned for his masses and sacred music. The group will perform two of Isaac’s compositions, alongside works by his contemporaries, Josquin des Prez, John Browne, and Nicolas Gombert.
The Tallis Scholars were founded by director Peter Phillips in 1973. Phillips has now appeared with the vocal ensemble in over 2,000 concerts and has made over 60 recordings, encouraging interest in polyphony all over the world.
After the performance, Phillips will be available for a meet-the-artist event in the Moss Arts Center Grand Lobby. Phillips will also lead a master class in vocal performance with members of the Virginia Tech Chamber Singers during the ensemble’s visit.

Tickets
Tickets for the performance are $25-$55 for general public and $10 for students and youth 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased online; at the Moss Arts Center's box office, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; or by calling 540-231-5300 during box office hours.
Parking is available in the North End Parking Garage on Turner Street. Virginia Tech faculty and staff possessing a valid Virginia Tech parking permit can enter and exit the garage free of charge. Limited street parking is also available. Parking on Alumni Mall is free on weekdays after 5 p.m. and on weekends.
