Carolyn Meier honored with emerita status
Carolyn Meier, associate professor librarian for University Libraries at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of associate professor emerita librarian by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the university community since 2006, Meier supported undergraduate education in a variety of ways, including her service on the University Curriculum Committee for General Education as member, vice-chair, and chair; her involvement on the First Year Experience Program; her work to help select the Virginia Tech Common Book; and her continuous efforts to help students connect with University Libraries.
Meier also served as a University Libraries liaison to University Studies students and worked to support traditionally underserved students. She also created successful library programs for the Corps of Cadets and the Athletics Department.
Meier served as the first year experience librarian for six years. She taught University Studies classes and helped other liaison librarians to plan, design, and assess their first year experience programs. She chaired a committee that created the Information Literacy Competency Test still used by the first year experience program today.
In addition, Meier helped in the transition of the University Libraries graduate course, GRAD 5124, from in-person to online instruction and developed modules on evaluating information and plagiarism used in psychology and business courses.
In addition to her work at Virginia Tech, Meier was active in the American Libraries Association; her online course work that focused on using iPads, tablets, and gadgets in teaching brought international visibility to Virginia Tech. She co-edited two books and authored or co-authored seven peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and reviews that focused on the use of technology to enhance the student learning experience.
She received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio Dominican College and master’s degree from the University of Michigan.
