President Sands and President Emeritus Steger offer condolences to Murphy family

Virginia Tech President Tim Sands and the university’s President Emeritus Charles Steger were both saddened to learn of Dr. Ed Murphy’s death and offered condolences to the family of the former Carilion Clinic leader.

“Ed was a true visionary, someone who realized that a growing relationship between Virginia Tech and Carilion would not only benefit patients and students but could propel the region’s economy,” said Steger, who partnered with Murphy to conceive and initiate the Virginia Tech Carilion partnership that led to the creation of the medical school and research institute in Roanoke.

“Because of Dr. Murphy’s original vision and his close working relationship with president Steger, we now have one of the best research-oriented medical schools in the country and a research institute that is having far-reaching impact that is building with each year,” said Sands “He laid the foundation for Virginia Tech’s partnership with Carilion that is entering its second decade with the promise of even greater benefit for our region and beyond.”
