Kusum Singh, a professor of educational research and evaluation in the School of Education in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emerita by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emerita title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the university community since 1992, Singh was the first female faculty member in the Educational Research and Evaluation Program and one of the first in the school to be promoted to full professor. Her early promise as a teacher and scholar was signaled by a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award.

Singh served on the editorial board of the Journal of Education Research and Research in the Middle Level Education. She authored and coauthored more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to her field by presenting at many national and international conferences.

At Virginia Tech, the quality of her teaching and advising was recognized with the William E. Wine Award for Faculty Achievement in 1996 and the Alumni Award for Excellence in Graduate Academic Advising in 2008.

Singh received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Agra University in India and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.
