Michelle Olsen has been named as an associate professor in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech, part of the College of Science.

Olsen earned a bachelor’s of science in biochemistry from Southern Oregon University and a doctoral degree in neuroscience from University of Alabama at Birmingham. She previously worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Cell, Developmental, and Integrative Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Her research focuses on better understanding the role of astrocytes, which are the most numerous cells in the human brain and spinal cord in early postnatal development. 

Olsen is one of 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty members to join the College of Science and the new School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech this year.
