Virginia Tech police officers to run for 24 hours to raise money for charity

In addition to helping maintain a safe and secure campus, the Virginia Tech Police Department supports the community through outreach and community service. The 24-hour relay fundraiser is one of the many ways the department gives back. In 2013, members of the Virginia Tech Police department ran in the Homecoming 5K (pictured above) after many of them had completed the earlier 1.52 Memorial Run in remembrance of Officer Deriek Crouse.

Ten members of the Virginia Tech Police Department will run a 24-hour relay to raise funds for charity from noon Oct. 7, through noon Oct. 8, at the outdoor track next to the Tech Softball Park.

Each member will run one mile at a time for 24 hours. The team hopes to run a total of 125 miles in support of the university’s goal to raise $325,000 this year for the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign.

The runners are lieutenants George Jackson and Tony Haga; Sgt. Derek Hutchison; officers Jason Miller, Trevor Compton, Cody Dunford, Josh Ingo, Ben Shultz, Michael Spencer; and Chief Kevin Foust.

Employees and members of the Virginia Tech community are invited to stop by at any time during the 24-hour relay to cheer on the runners or to make a donation.

Individuals who are interested in donating can:

Sponsor a runner or the entire team in advance by pledging a per mile amount
Make a cash donation anytime during the 24-hour relay
Virginia Tech employees can make a donation via payroll deduction

The Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign is a voluntary, charitable donation program for state employees. It is a convenient method for employees to support more than 1,000 participating charities. Since 2010, Virginia Tech employees have donated more than $1.7 million to local charities in the New River Valley and across the state through the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign.

All charitable donations made through payroll deduction, cash, check, credit card, or stock donation are eligible for tax deduction status.
