Individual tickets are now available for Moss Arts Center’s 2016-17 season

Patrons can now purchase tickets to individual performances featured in the Moss Arts Center’s 2016-17 season. The center’s newest season brings diverse voices and viewpoints, fresh new works and artists, inspired global expressions, and continued opportunities for learning and engagement.

The 2016-17 season opens with a performance by Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Edgar Meyer, who transcends musical boundaries — from Bach to bluegrass — with his acoustic bass, gift for storytelling, and eclectic mix of musical selections.

This will kick off a season of performances, exhibitions, and experiences crafted to expand cultural awareness, deepen understanding, and explore fresh ideas and perspectives.

Musicians from Cuba, Tanzania, and Zanzibar, along with a Bollywood music theatre production direct from Dubai, bring the energy, valued traditions, and unique contexts from cultures around the world, while Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef and author and cartoonist Lynda Barry explore global thought and creativity.

Experience diverse views and voices through movement with dance company Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion and the melding of theatre, puppetry, music, and film with the multimedia performance “Nufonia Must Fall” by scratch DJ and graphic novelist Kid Koala.

Outstanding young artists, such as the Harlem Quartet and singer/songwriter Dori Freeman, bring energy and passion to a season that also features established masters in their craft, including legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by musical director Wynton Marsalis.

The Moss Arts Center continues its partnerships with regional organizations. The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra returns to the center with a masterworks concert and its popular “Holiday Pops” program. Southwest Virginia Ballet brings a performance of “Romeo and Juliet” and Opera Roanoke performs a fully staged production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway blockbuster “South Pacific.”

All performances will be held in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Moss Arts Center’s Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall, unless otherwise noted. 

This fall, the Moss Arts Center will present a suite of four one-person exhibitions by women artists – Susan Jamison, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Amy Cutler, and Lynn Hershman Leeson – who address the female persona, including the various aspects of being a woman with all the strengths, vulnerabilities, and challenges entailed.

Complementing the center’s season of performances and visual arts exhibitions are a collection of engagement events designed to offer deeper connections with artists, ideas, and community members. These include matinee performances for area students, meet-the-artist events, workshops and master classes for Virginia Tech students, and networking events for young professionals.

Tickets for individual performances for the 2016-17 season can be purchased online; at the Moss Arts Center's box office from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; or by calling 540-231-5300.

Subscriptions for the 2016-17 season are also available and offer discounted prices and priority seat selection. There are three ways to subscribe: the Premier Subscription includes all performances at a 30 percent discount off adult ticket prices, the Gold Build Your Own Subscription allows for a 25 percent discount off the price of adult tickets for 15 or more performances, and the Silver Build Your Own Subscription offers a 20 percent discount on five to 14 performances. Student and youth tickets are always $10 per performance, including subscriptions.
