David C. Jacobsen, associate professor of music in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of “associate professor emeritus” by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1988, Jacobsen taught flute and saxophone and performed on both instruments frequently in recitals, chamber music concerts, and soloist engagements on campus as well as on national and world stages.

Among his performances were recitals at the World Saxophone Congress in 2000 and 2003.

Many of Jacobsen’s students continued on to prestigious graduate programs in music. On eight occasions, his students won national University Symphonic Wind Ensembles soloist competitions.

He served Virginia Tech’s Department of Music as assistant department head for seven years.

Jacobsen received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, a master’s degree from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Illinois.
