Hundreds of employees start 2016 off right at the Hokie Wellness Health and Benefits Fair
BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech provides employees numerous opportunities to maintain healthy lifestyles — including this week's Hokie Wellness Health and Benefits Fair.
The fair, sponsored by the Department of Human Resources, the Division of Student Affairs, and Carilion Clinic, is held annually as part of the university’s commitment to a healthy community. To encourage participation, all employees received two hours of approved leave to attend the fair.
This year, more than 1,200 Virginia Tech employees took advantage of this benefit and attended.
“A healthy Hokie community starts with the health and well-being of each individual,” said Cathy Kropff, director of Hokie Wellness. “Awareness, education, and prevention are key to building and nurturing healthy lifestyles. We are fortunate to have university leaders who embrace this belief and encourage employees to attend the fair.”
Faculty and staff who attended the Jan. 13 fair at McComas Hall had the opportunity to participate in dozens of activities, health screenings, demonstrations, and educational sessions. More than 35 employees also received flu, shingles, tetanus, or pneumonia vaccines, which were free for some employees with benefits.
A variety of exercise classes, including swim lessons, as well as cardio and weight rooms were available for employees to work up a sweat. More than 80 health, wellness, and benefits exhibitors were also there, providing an array of information and resources.
While employees walked out of the fair equipped with valuable information and prizes, they were also encouraged to give back. In true display of the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), 25 employees donated blood at the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
On Friday, Jan. 22, Hokie Wellness will host a health and wellness fair for students from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in McComas Hall. It will include health screenings, workouts, interactive activities, and educational sessions.
