Ashley Reed joins English faculty
Ashley Reed has been appointed an assistant professor in the Department of English at Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
Reed is one of 16 new faculty members this fall at the college. This year’s hires enhance existing program strengths and increase the college’s national profile across the arts, humanities, and human and social sciences.
“Faculty excellence is at the heart of Virginia Tech’s ability to succeed,” Dean Elizabeth Spiller said. "I am very pleased to welcome such a gifted and transformative group of scholars, artists, and teachers to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences."
Reed’s research examines imaginative engagements with Protestant theology in novels and short stories of the 19th century United States, particularly how female and African-American authors envisioned new forms of personal and communal agency through the lens of religious belief. Other scholarly interests are the digital humanities and the relationship between medicine and religion in American culture.
She will be teaching English, American literary history, American literature, and digital humanities.
Reed is a co-editor of “The Sentimental Mode: Essays in Literature, Film, and Television”; and Literature, Medicine, and Religion, a special issue of the journal Literature and Medicine. She has also been published in Digital Humanities Quarterly.
Reed holds a Ph.D. and a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor's degree from the College of William & Mary.
