Douglas Lind joins philosophy faculty
Douglas Lind has been appointed a professor and head of the Department of Philosophy at Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
Lind is one of 16 new faculty members this fall at the college. This year’s hires enhance existing program strengths and increase the college’s national profile across the arts, humanities, and human and social sciences.
“Faculty excellence is at the heart of Virginia Tech’s ability to succeed,” Dean Elizabeth Spiller said. "I am very pleased to welcome such a gifted and transformative group of scholars, artists, and teachers to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences."
Lind’s research specialization is philosophy of law, primarily the nature of judicial practice, the methods of legal reasoning and decision-making, and contemporary efforts to revitalize indigenous justice systems in the post-colonial common-law world. He will be teaching courses related to philosophy of law and jurisprudence.
The author of “Logic and Legal Reasoning” and co-editor of “Pragmatism, Law, and Language,” Lind has been published in The Judicial Review, Australian Journal of Legal Philosophy, Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence, Journal of Legal Education, and other refereed periodicals.
Lind holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, a J.D. from Washington University, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota. He was previously a professor at the University of Idaho, serving as chair of its Department of Philosophy for nine years. He practiced law for a number of years, specializing in environmental law.
