Susan L. Ganter joins education faculty
Susan L. Ganter has been appointed a professor and director of the School of Education at Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. She also has an appointment in the College of Science as a professor of mathematics.
Ganter is one of 16 new faculty members this fall at the college. This year’s hires enhance existing program strengths and increase the college’s national profile across the arts, humanities, and human and social sciences.
“Faculty excellence is at the heart of Virginia Tech’s ability to succeed,” Dean Elizabeth Spiller said. "I am very pleased to welcome such a gifted and transformative group of scholars, artists, and teachers to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences."
Ganter most recently served as chair of the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Instructional Technology Education at East Carolina University and a professor of mathematics and mathematics education. Previously, she held numerous faculty positions in mathematical sciences, including at Clemson University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She also spent several years working in Washington, D.C., including an appointment at the National Science Foundation as a senior research fellow.
She belongs to a number of professional organizations, including the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. She has authored dozens of articles and chapters for peer-reviewed journals, contributed to refereed books and monographs, and served as director for numerous national projects.
Ganter’s research interests include student learning in undergraduate mathematics and the contributions of mathematics to student success across the STEM disciplines. She has been the principal investigator on many projects funded by federal, state, foundation, and corporate agencies.
Ganter holds a Ph.D. and a master’s degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and two bachelor’s degrees from Southern Methodist University.
