Free performances feature chamber music and an evening of music from opera and Broadway
Acclaimed musicians who have performed with some of the world’s greatest orchestras and music ensembles will perform a series of free chamber music concerts, with repertoire ranging from Mendelssohn and Shostakovich to Boccherini and Brahms. The series also includes an evening of selections from opera and Broadway favorites, performed by three talented vocalists.
Presented by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, the performances are free and open to the public and will be held in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Moss Arts Center’s Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.
The musicians participating in the chamber series have performed in prestigious music events, such as the Tanglewood, Taos, Ravinia, and Aspen Music Festivals, and with renowned orchestras and music ensembles, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Tel Aviv Chamber Orchestra, Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony (Russia), National Symphony of Ukraine, Johannesburg Philharmonic, and Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra.
In addition to their feature performances, the instrumentalists will mentor a new generation of musicians participating in the 2015 Chamber Intensive Workshop. The program will culminate with a performance of classical repertoire by the young musicians participating in the program.

Grand Voices from Opera and Broadway
- Saturday, June 20, 7:30 p.m.
- Favorite arias, duets, and trios, from grand opera to Broadway, including Verdi’s “Otello,” Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro,” and Puccini’s “Tosca,” as well as selections from “Chicago,” “Carousel,” and “Wicked.”
- Featuring Lauren Jelencovich, soprano; Francesca Mondanaro, soprano; Adam Margulies, tenor; and Richard Masters, piano.
Mendelssohn and Shostakovich
- Sunday, June 21, 2 p.m.
- Piano trio and quintet work, including Mendelssohn’s "Piano Trio in D Minor," op. 49 and Dmitry Shostakovich’s "Piano Quintet," op. 57.
- Featuring Shmuel Ashkenasi, violin; David Ehrlich, violin; Mathias Tacke, violin; Michael Klotz, viola; Dmitry Kouzov, cello; and Dmitri Shteinberg, piano.
Boccherini and Brahms
- Tuesday, June 23, 7:30 p.m.
- Sting quintet and sextet works, including Boccherini’s “String Quintet in C Major” and Johannes Brahms’ “String Sextet in B Flat Major," op.18.
- Featuring David Ehrlich, violin; Mathias Tacke, violin; Michael Klotz, viola; Shmuel Ashkenasi, viola; Dmitry Kouzov, cello; and Benjamin Wyatt, cello.
Mahler, Brahms, and more
- Thursday, June 25, 7:30 p.m.
- Piano with strings in duet and quartet works, including Mahler’s “Piano Quartet;” Brahms’ “Piano Quartet in G Minor," op. 25;” and Franck’s “Piano Quintet in F Minor.”
- Featuring Shmuel Ashkenasi, violin; David Ehrlich, violin; Mathias Tacke, violin; Michael Klotz, viola; Dmitry Kouzov, cello; and Meng Chieh Liu, piano.
Next Generation Artists
- Sunday, June 28, 2 p.m.
- Dynamic young musicians perform classical repertoire in the culminating concert of the 2015 Chamber Intensive Workshop.

Parking is available in the North End Parking Garage on Turner Street. Virginia Tech faculty and staff possessing a valid Virginia Tech parking permit can enter and exit the garage free of charge. Limited street parking is also available. Parking on Alumni Mall is free on weekdays after 5 p.m. and on weekends.
