Gov. Terry McAuliffe presented the award for Outstanding Achievement in Bioscience to the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at THRiVE 2015 – a recent conference in Chantilly, Virginia, focused on growing bioscience business and research in the state.

“We were very honored to receive this award from the governor,” said Chris Barrett, executive director of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute. “This is a clear signal that all our hard work in the field has paid off.”

During the conference, Josep Bassaganya-Riera, director of the Nutritional Immunology and Molecular Medicine Laboratory at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute and founder of BioTherapeutics, discussed how computational modeling is used to guide pre-clinical and clinical research.

Also during the daylong program, Michael Friedlander, executive director of the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute and Virginia Tech’s associate provost for health sciences, participated in a panel discussion of how to make Virginia best in class in commercializing university bioscience research.

THRiVE 2015 was organized by Virginia Bio, a statewide nonprofit trade association representing the life sciences industry in Virginia. Its mission is to connect entrepreneurs with funders, collaborators with partners, and push bioscience in the commonwealth into the 21st century.
