Record cold temperatures are predicted today and Friday morning with expected temperatures to range from zero to 5 degrees below zero.  Associated wind chills could reach minus 15 to minus 25 degrees. Frostbite can occur within 30 minutes at those temperatures. The National Weather Service is predicting additional snow on Saturday. Report slippery conditions

  • Blowing snow and freezing temperatures are creating slippery spots on roads and sidewalks despite the efforts of Facilities Services staff. Please report problem areas to the Facilities Services Customer Service Center at 540-231-4300.
  • Also, freezing temperatures often lead to broken water pipes in campus buildings. Please report any suspected breaks.

Cold weather tips to keep you safe and protect your home or apartment.

  • If you go outside wear several layers of loose fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one heavy layer. Outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent. Wear gloves or mittens and snow boots. Wear a hat, preferably one that covers your ears. Covering your mouth with a scarf or your hand can help protect your lungs.
  • Keep pipes from freezing inside your home or apartment by allowing faucets to drip.
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet from flammable objects and refuel outside.
  • Check on others who might not be able to care for themselves.
  • While outside, check on others for signs of frostbite or hypothermia.

Feb. 18: Winter weather continues to impact university; prepare for extreme cold temperatures

BLACKSBURG, Va., Feb. 18, 2015 – Bitterly cold temperatures are expected through Friday for much of Virginia, following Monday's winter storm that covered much of the state in snow and prompted Governor Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency. 1:25 p.m. update: The Richmond Center is closing at 5 p.m. today. All evening classes are canceled.

12:40 p.m. update: The following was taken from an email sent to the Blacksburg campus:

Extremely cold temperatures are predicted to affect the Blacksburg area beginning this afternoon and lasting through Friday. Also, an additional 1-3 inches of snow is expected this afternoon, and it might fall at a very intense rate with strong wind gusts. Lightning and thunder snow is also possible during this period.

1 p.m. update: The latest from university dining services: Au Bon Pain at Graduate Life Center opened at noon; Au Bon Pain and Burger ’37 at Squires Student Center opened at noon; Turner Place opened at 11 a.m. and is operating in select venues throughout business hours today; D2, Deet’s Place and DXpress all opened at 7 a.m. and are operating with normal hours; Au Bon Pain at Goodwin Hall is closed today; Vet Med Café is closed today; Dunkin Donuts at Owens Hall opened at 7:30 a.m.; Hokie Grill is open and operating with normal hours; Owens Food Court at Owens Hall is open and operating with normal hours; West End Market is open and operating with normal hours. Current dining center hours.

12:35 p.m. update: The Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg is closed today.  Emergency services are available as usual. The Hampton Roads Center is closed today. All classes are canceled.

10:20 p.m. update: The Virginia Tech National Capital Region is closed Tuesday. All classes are canceled.

9:45 p.m. update: The Blacksburg campus will open at noon Tuesday. Morning classes have been canceled. Classes beginning at 12:30 p.m. or thereafter will be held as scheduled. University staff designated "emergency personnel" must report as instructed by their supervisor.

6:30 p.m. update: Recreational Sports will close both McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall tonight at 8 p.m.

1:55 p.m. update: The Virginia Tech National Capital Region will close at 7 p.m. tonight. All classes with a start time of 7 p.m. or later are canceled.

11:40 a.m. update: The Graduate Life Center at Donaldson-Brown and the G. Burke Johnston Student Center will close at 12:30 p.m. Squires Student Center will remain open until 8 p.m. 

11:15 a.m. update: Au Bon Pain at Goodwin Hall and the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson-Brown are closing at noon. Turner Place at Lavery Hall is closing at 2 p.m. All other dining centers are operating as normal. 

10:55 a.m. update: A snow emergency has been declared effective 2 p.m. today. Parking restrictions will be in effect.

Campus offices to close at 12:30 p.m. All university events scheduled this evening have been canceled. Blacksburg Transit

  • Blacksburg Transit will cease all service in Blacksburg and Christiansburg at 5 p.m. today. Normal full service will operate until 2 p.m. After 2 p.m. service will transition to half hour service in Blacksburg. Commuter routes with service back to Christiansburg will begin at 12:30 p.m. today.
