The National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico (Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México) will celebrate the work of acclaimed Spanish composers with a performance in Blacksburg on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Presented by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, the performance will be held in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Moss Arts Center’s Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.

The National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico was established in 1971 by music director and chief conductor Enrique Batiz and the Mexican government to promote music as a means of union and identification among Mexicans.

Based in the city of Toluca, Mexico, the orchestra reaches all corners of its home country and has toured the world. Their repertoire and extensive discography span classical masterworks, rich music from Spain, and newly commissioned works by Mexican composers.

The orchestra’s performance at the Moss Arts Center will feature work by four Spanish composers — Joaquín Turin’s “Tres Danzas Fantásticas,” Op. 22; “Concierto de Aranjuez,” by Joaquín Rodrigo, featuring guitar soloist Alfonso Moreno; “Three Spanish Dances,” by Enrique Granados; and Manuel de Falla’s “Noches en los Jardines de España,” which features piano soloist Irina Chistiakova.

In existence for more than 40 years, the orchestra promotes new musical talents and has given rise to over 40 soloists, helping in the discovery and encouragement of young performers through the International Henryk Szeryng Violin Contest, which began in 1992.

The orchestra has appeared in concert with a large number of guest conductors and soloists from around the world and both the orchestra and its artistic director have repeatedly received the Annual Award from the Mexican Union of Chroniclers of Theater and Music for its promotion of musical activities in Mexico.
