Music on Mondays presents a wide range of musical experiences
Looking to infuse a bit of culture and arts into your week? Virginia Tech’s School of Performing Arts’ Music on Mondays series may be the answer.
This season's lineup includes 15 concerts by guest and faculty artists, spanning a wide range of styles and featuring instrumental as well as vocal performances. Many of the performances are free.
Music on Mondays concerts gives audience members a wide range of musical offerings. It could be the mastery of pianist Douglas Humpherys, or String Noise, a violin-viola husband and wife duo. New faculty artist Amy Gillick will provide the chance to hear a bassoon recital.
Young and old will be fascinated to watch and listen as faculty member Annie Stevens performs a percussion recital. The Squires Student Center Recital Salon, located at 290 College Avenue and the venue for the concert series, offers audience members the opportunity to sit up close to watch the musicians as they combine their artistic talents to bring the printed page to life.
On Monday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m., a performance by world renowned baritone Donnie Ray Albert promises to be a Monday to remember. Albert will sing American art songs, including several works based on the poetry of Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman, Claude McKay, and Edna St. Vincent Millay.
The first half of the concert will be devoted to “Border Line, Op. 24,” a work composed by Robert Owens, a composer that set many of Hughes’ poems to music. Faculty member and pianist Richard Masters will perform with Albert.

Tickets for Donnie Ray Albert are $15 general, $10 senior, and $5 student, and may be purchased through the Squires Student Centers and Activities ticket office, or by calling 540-231-5615. Tickets will also be available at the box office beginning one hour prior to the performance.
Free parking is available on weekends and after 5 p.m. weekdays in the Squires Lot, located at the corner of College Avenue and Otey Streets, in the Architecture Annex Lot on Otey Street, and the Perry Street/Prices Fork lots.
