Katie Carmichael has been appointed an assistant professor in the Department of English in the College of Liberal arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech.

Carmichael is one of 27 new tenure-track faculty members at the college this fall. The new hires are part of the college’s ongoing efforts to attract renowned scholars to strengthen and expand its teaching, research, and engagement programs. 

The college has added more than 100 full-time permanent faculty members in the past four years.

Carmichael’s area of research is sociolinguistics with a focus on how speakers express and construct their identities through language use. She will teach courses in language and society, linguistic discourse analysis, and will serve on the Department of English’s Master of Arts Committee.

Carmichael has contributed chapters to a number of books and has been published in journals including Language in Society, American Speech, and Southern Journal of Linguistics.

She holds a Ph.D. from Ohio State University, and a master's degree and bachelor's degree from Tulane University.
