Douglas F. Cannon, assistant professor of communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been accepted into the College of Fellows of the Public Relations Society of America.

One of 15 inductees for 2014, Cannon is the first full-time Virginia Tech communication faculty member elected to the College of Fellows. The induction ceremony will be Oct. 11 during the PRSA’s 2014 International Conference in Washington, D.C.

The College of Fellows, which includes only 1.5 percent of PRSA’s 21,000 members, was founded in 1989 to recognize public relations professionals who have distinguished themselves through their experience and leadership in their field. They also must exhibit personal and professional qualities that make them role models for other practitioners or educators.

Cannon joined the Virginia Tech faculty in 2010 and teaches several public relations courses. Previously he was a journalist and public relations practitioner for more than three decades.

Cannon’s research centers on how faith groups practice public relations. He has written for a number of publications, including Global Media Journal and the Journal of Communication and Religion.

Cannon holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, and a master's degree and bachelor's degree from Ohio State University.

PRSA is the largest professional organization serving the U.S. public relations community. Based in New York, it comprises 112 local chapters and is active at more than 300 colleges and universities.
