Dr. Chris Byron has joined the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech as an associate professor of large animal surgery in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences.

An equine surgeon with experience in academia and private practice, Byron comes to the college from the American Veterinary Medical Association, where he was an assistant scientific editor. In this position, he managed the peer review and editing of scientific manuscripts for the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Journal of Veterinary Research. 

He previously worked as a surgeon at the Ruffian Equine Medical Center in Elmont, New York, and an assistant professor of equine surgery at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

After earning both a bachelor’s degree in biology and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Cornell University, Byron completed an equine surgery residency at Michigan State University. He is board-certified with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and has a research interest in equine joint disease.
