Creative writing and digital media summer program brings young minds to campus
This summer, Southwest Virginia students ages 10 to 18 can enjoy a on-campus atmosphere while honing their writing and computer skills.
All Write @ Virginia Tech, a creative writing and digital media workshop, will be held July 14-18 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.
Students are grouped by ages and will take classes in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and digital media. There are no limits on what they may write, such as screenplays, raps, dramas, or illustrated texts. Following lunch each afternoon, participants have an opportunity to return to any of the classes to work on any projects they choose.
The workshop is offered by the Blue Ridge Writing Project, and Virginia Tech's Department of English and Continuing and Professional Education program and will be held Shanks Hall at 180 Turner St., NW.
“This creativity and skill-building workshop is designed for a good balance of group work and explorations based on individual interests,” says Aileen Murphy, director of the Blue Ridge Writing Project and senior instructor in the English Department at Virginia Tech. “The most frequent comments by kids in past workshops are about what a fun week they’ve had.”
The Blue Ridge Writing Project is one of more than 200 National Writing Project member sites in the United States. The project assists teachers and students in Southwest Virginia through programs such as an invitational summer institute, outreach, and writing and professional development workshops. Teacher-consultants from the project will visit and assist All Write classes to improve the writing experiences.
