Nicholas Copeland joins sociology faculty
Nicholas Copeland has been appointed an assistant professor of American Indian Studies in the Department of Sociology at Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
Copeland is one of 14 new faculty members at the college this fall. These new hires are part of the college’s ongoing efforts to attract renowned scholars to strengthen and expand its teaching, research, and engagement programs. More than 70 full-time permanent faculty members have been added to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences in the past three years under the leadership of Dean Sue Ott Rowlands.
Copeland’s research areas include social anthropology, indigenous social movements, governance, development, and citizenship in Guatemala and Latin America. He is also a co-author of “The World of Wal-Mart: Discounting the American Dream,” published this year by Routledge Press.
He received an H.F. Guggenheim Foundation dissertation fellowship and was a postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Maryland's Latin American Studies Center.
Copeland, who is teaching courses on indigenous politics and sociological theory at Virginia Tech, received his Ph.D. in anthropology, master's degree, and bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
