María del Carmen Caña Jiménez has been appointed an assistant professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.

Caña Jiménez is one of 14 new faculty members at the college this fall. She holds a Ph.D. in romance languages and literatures and a Master of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as licenciatura from Universidad de Sevilla in Spain. She has been published in a number of scholarly journals.

Caña Jiménez’s research focuses on contemporary Colombian, Central American and Peninsular Spanish narratives and popular cultures, specifically on topics related to violence, aesthetics, neoliberalism, trauma, memory, and narratives of childhood.

At Virginia Tech, she is teaching courses in the Spanish language and Hispanic culture and literature.
