The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech has named April Hylton of Floyd, Va., as its interim assistant dean of administration.

Hylton, who is currently the director of human resources at the veterinary college, will oversee the college’s budget, financial operation, personnel, capital planning, and construction activities.

She assumed these new responsibilities on Aug. 1, following the retirement of Mike Harness, associate dean for finance and administration, after 38 years of state service. Harness will continue to work on a part-time basis during the leadership transition at the veterinary college.

In 2005, Hylton joined the veterinary college as its first director of human resources. In that role, she has provided individualized human resources support for the college, including implementing new policies for new and departing employees, comparative salary analysis for faculty and staff, and training and counseling for supervisors and employees on work-related issues.

Prior to joining the college, Hylton worked as a senior human resources specialist for a manufacturing company in Floyd, where she provided support for benefits administration, recruiting and staffing, employee relations, safety, and compensation.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, Hylton is active in several community-related activities, including her church, the Floyd County Economic Development Authority, and the Floyd Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization.

She has a bachelor’s degree in employee relations from Radford University and a master of business administration from Virginia Tech.
