Composer Richard Danielpour joins the Kandinsky Trio for a concert celebrating their 26th anniversary season on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 3 p.m. in the Squires Recital Salon at Virginia Tech.

The program will feature the premier of Danielpour’s composition “The Desert Wanderer.” Other works on the program are Joseph Haydn’s Trio in C Major, and Maurice Ravel’s Trio in A Minor. Danielpour will also hold a pre-concert composition master class at 1 p.m. in the Recital Salon.

Danielpour is regarded as one of the most gifted and sought-after composers of his generation. He has been commissioned by an impressive array of international music institutions, festivals, and artists, and his music has been championed by such soloists as Yo-Yo Ma, Jessye Norman, Dawn Upshaw, and Emanuel Ax. He has been a member of the Manhattan School of Music composition faculty since 1993.

The Kandinsky Trio, comprised of Elizabeth Bachelder, piano; Benedict Goodfriend, violin; and Alan Weinstein, cello, is celebrating one of the longest and most successful artist residencies in the United States with over a thousand concerts of high caliber chamber music in the U.S., Europe, and Canada. They draw new audiences with both their passionate performances of masterworks and innovative ideas in redefining chamber music.

The Trio is one of only six piano trios ever to win the prestigious Chamber Music America Residency Award. In 1999, the Kandinsky Trio was chosen by Sen. Charles Robb as the representative of the Commonwealth of Virginia at the Kennedy Center’s State Days series. In 2002, the Trio was in residence at the European/American master classes at the Hindemith Center in Blonay, Switzerland, and continues one of this country’s most enduring chamber music residencies at historic Roanoke College in Salem, Va. In March 2010, the National Education Association recognized the Kandinsky Trio’s  achievement with an American Masterpieces grant to tour and record the jazz influenced chamber music of Gunther Schuller and John D’earth. The CD will be released this October.

The recital is the second in a series of nine visiting artist recitals which include Escape Ten percussion duo (Oct. 7), Jeff Nelsen, horn (Oct. 21), Javier Vinasco, clarinet (Nov. 4), Jennifer Aylmer, soprano (Nov 18), Emmanuelle Bertrand, cello and Pascal Amoyel, piano (Dec. 10), Nicholas Ross, piano (Jan. 27), and vir with the Jazz Ensembles (April 29).

Tickets for the recital are $15 general, $10 senior, and $5 student; the composition workshop is free of charge for the general public. Tickets may be purchased at the Student Centers and Activities Ticket Office on the first floor of Squires Student Center, online, or by calling 540-231-5615.
