“Engram” is an exhibit by Hollins University art professor Jennifer D. Anderson. It will be on display at Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center Tuesday, Aug. 27, through Saturday, Sept. 28.

There will be an opening reception at the gallery on Friday, Aug. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

The Perspective Gallery is located on the second floor in Squires Student Center at Virginia Tech. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.  The gallery is closed on Mondays.

Anderson’s work involves hand-cutting intricate lace and repeating patterns into discarded reproductions of paintings, shattering the original picture, and creating a new image across the delicate remainders of paper and color.

Dealing with the ephemeral, the work takes into account the vulnerable nature of life and, in the artist’s words, “reincarnates the discarded.”  Shadows created from the passage of light through these art works becomes integral to the art, and invite the viewer to ponder what is real.

“The labor intensive process of hand-cutting these images, not only grants the ‘original’ reproduction with a new meaning visually and in form, but also a new sense of the artist’s hand,” said Anderson.
