Daniel B. Goff named 2013 Outstanding Graduating Senior in College of Natural Resources and Environment
Daniel B. Goff of Christiansburg, Va., a senior majoring in meteorology and geography, has been named the Outstanding Graduating Senior in the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech for the 2012-13 academic year.
Goff will receive his bachelor’s degree in May. A dean's list student, he is the recipient of numerous scholarships, including the Virginia Tech Sidman Poole Academic Merit Scholarship, the Charles Gose Jr. Scholarship, and a National Science Foundation STEM Scholarship. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa and Gamma Theta Upsilon honor societies.
Goff is chief meteorologist at WUVT-FM, the university’s student-run radio station, and is a weather columnist for RVANews in Richmond, Va. He has experience as a storm chaser and has worked as a researcher for the National Weather Service, examining hail using Doppler radar technology.
Last fall, Goff presented at the inaugural TEDxVirginiaTech event. He serves as president of the Academic Competition Organization and as the manager of the WxChallenge National Forecasting Competition.
Outstanding Senior Awards are presented at the Student Honors Day Banquet each spring. Co-sponsored by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and the senior class, the award recognizes outstanding student performance in each college of the university. Students are selected on the basis of their grade point average (a minimum of a 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale) and outstanding performance in several or all of the following areas: academic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, and contributions of service to the university and/or community.
