Squires Student Center 75th anniversary in photos: A Perspective Gallery exhibit
Perspective Gallery will host an exhibit celebrating Squires Student Center's 75-year history.
The exhibit, Coming Together-Moving Forward: Squires 75th Anniversary in Images, will begin Thursday, Nov. 15, and run through Saturday, Dec. 15. This event is free and open to the public.
Archived photos, Bugle yearbook publications, and Virginia Tech Union scrapbooks, focusing on the impact of Squires Student Center on Virginia Tech’s campus and student life, will be on display. The scrapbooks date back to 1968 and illustrate events and activities that have happened over the last 40 years.
A reception will be held on Friday. Nov. 30, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to celebrate the exhibit. The theme of the reception is “Recording Today’s Memories.” Visitors will have the opportunity to write journal entries and use the Division of Student Affairs photo booth from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Photos and journal entries will be put on display within the exhibit alongside the gallery pieces. Cake and punch will be served from 1 to 3 p.m. A more formal reception will begin at 4 p.m. and will feature local foods.
Squires Student Center was built in 1937 and has been a center for the Virginia Tech community for the past 75 years. During this time, the building experienced two major renovations and was named after John Houston Squires, who donated $10,000 toward the building’s construction. Squires was a Class of 1905 Virginia Tech alumnus and distinguished scientist.
