Virginia Tech rec sports wins three NIRSA creative awards
The Virginia Tech Department of Recreational Sports was honored with three Creative Excellence Awards by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association at its annual conference in March.
The awards are designed to recognize innovation and creativity in the marketing of recreational sports, fitness, facilities, and programs by association members.
The department brought home a first-place award in the large-scale signage category, which included the motivational wall-size action posters and the six 55-inch flat screen televisions that were included in the 2010 expansion of McComas Hall.
The 2011-12 Rec Sports Calendar, created by Taylor Terrill of Stafford, Va., a senior majoring in architecture in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, received second-place honors in the student publication category. Terrill also received third-place honors for the University Bookstore Group X launch party design.
“It’s exciting to see our work be recognized outside of the university setting,” Terrill said. “It is an encouragement to continue to pursue quality and excellence in what we do at rec sports.”
The calendar is used to promote recreational sports and special events at Virginia Tech throughout the year. In addition, the calendar gives the university’s business community an opportunity to offer coupons and discounts to students, faculty, and staff. Approximately 7,000 calendars are distributed during freshman and transfer orientations and at many other events around the community.
Recreational Sports is a department within the Division of Student Affairs. The department joins in partnership with the university to enhance the quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, their families, and the community by providing recreational and fitness opportunities throughout the year.
