Alison Matthiessen of Roanoke, Va., has joined the Division of Undergraduate Education at Virginia Tech as its communications manager.

In her new role, Matthiessen will coordinate and lead the communications plan for the division, which houses the Office of Student Success, the Office of Undergraduate Programs, the Office of Enrollment and Degree Management, the Office of Academic Effectiveness, and the Institute for Distance and Distributed Learning. In addition, the division covers accreditation and the Office of Learning Technologies.

She previously served as marketing communications specialist at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, Va. While there, Matthiessen contributed to the planning and implementation of the school’s communications program as it opened for the charter class in August 2010. Her responsibilities included developing marketing collateral, building out photography and video databases, coordinating special events, and handling media relations efforts.

Matthiessen began her career in journalism as a local television news producer for the NBC and Fox affiliates in Roanoke, Va. She received the industry’s highest honor, a Peabody Award, as a contributing producer with WSLS-10.

Matthiessen received her bachelor’s degree in communications at Virginia Tech.
