Veterinary college hires Dr. Daniel Binder as clinical instructor of ophthalmology

Dr. Daniel Binder of Christiansburg, Va., has joined the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech as a clinical instructor of ophthalmology in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences.

Binder was an ophthalmology resident at the veterinary college before accepting the clinical instructor position. He previously worked as an intern in small animal surgery and medicine at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Ophthalmology refers to the branch of medicine concerned with the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eye.

“Dr. Binder joined the department as a faculty member to help develop our auxiliary ophthalmology service. We are pleased that Dr. Binder will continue to offer his knowledge and experience in the field of veterinary ophthalmology at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine,” said Dr. Greg Daniel, head of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences. “Dr. Binder does a very good job with the ophthalmology service, and he has become a popular instructor among the fourth year students. With his previous research training, he also has perspective as a neuroscientist and a strong research background.”

Binder began his new position at the veterinary college on July 16. In his new role, Binder will teach fourth year veterinary students, who have completed three years of classroom instruction and begun clinical rotations, about the diagnosis and treatment of eye issues in companion animals.

Binder has a bachelor’s degree in psychobiology from Binghampton University, a doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Virginia, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He is board certified with the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
