Nine Virginia Tech students and their professors — Theodore Sipes, baritone and assistant professor of voice in the Department of Music, and Ariana Wyatt, instructor in music — are going to be performing around Blacksburg and the surrounding area June 24-26. The group is raising awareness of the Vocal Arts and Music Festival, presented by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, as well as their own department.

“Performing in public is an important part of our students’ education,” said Sipes, who is co-directing these summer student performances with Wyatt. “Bringing an international music festival such as the Vocal Arts and Music Festival to campus provides a great potential resource for our students. We're excited about the opportunity for the students to perform and to hear the great performances of the festival, as well.”

All of the student singers are music majors. The student singers are

  • Claire Davenport, soprano, of Richmond, Va., a junior at Virginia Tech;
  • Daniel Gonzales, baritone, of Manassas, Va., a senior at Virginia Tech;

“We are so pleased that Virginia Tech’s students are adding their voices to this year’s festival, and sharing their talents across the region. Our goal for the festival is to celebrate the beauty of opera, song, and the human voice in all its many forms; our faculty and students are wonderful partners in fulfilling that mission,” said Center for the Arts Executive Director Ruth Waalkes.

Free parking is available in the Squires Lot, located at the corner of College Avenue and Otey Street or the Architecture Annex Lot also on Otey Street. Find more parking information online or call (540) 231-3200.
