W.E. “Bill” Beal, professor of animal and poultry sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the “professor emeritus” title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1979, Beal contributed to research to improve the reproductive efficiency of cattle. He is the author of more than 50 scientific publications and made presentations to numerous state, regional, and national meetings of livestock producers and veterinarians.

In addition to his research, Beal provided leadership to the undergraduate advising program in animal and poultry sciences, having served as a coordinating counselor and career advisor. He served on numerous doctoral committees and served as major advisor to many doctoral and master’s degree students.

Beal also has received national recognition for excellence in undergraduate teaching from the American Society of Animal Science. He has served in leadership positions in the Virginia Tech Academy of Teaching Excellence and as a charter member of the University Academy of Advising Excellence.

Beal received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University, a master’s degree from the University of Wyoming, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.
