Douglas Martin, director of benefits in the Department of Human Resources under the Vice President for Administrative Services at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the "director emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1969, Martin made significant contributions to the university community as a leader in employee benefits programs. He also served as an advisor on numerous committees and advisory councils.

Martin provided guidance and support to thousands of employees, retirees, and prospective employees.

He often served as a guest lecturer for undergraduate and graduate classes, supervised internships that provided professional experiences for students, and served on student committees. Martin also provided many years of contributions to the department, division, and university by providing expert service.

Martin received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and an Ed.D. from Virginia Tech.
