Dr. Donald Barber, professor and former head of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1984, Barber contributed significantly to the research and knowledge of radiology and nuclear medicine. He also served as diplomate and past president of the American College of Veterinary Radiology, as well as on the university's radiation safety committee.

He served as the head of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences for 16 years. As a professor, Barber taught a wide range of courses offered in the professional Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine curriculum and at the graduate and post-graduate levels. He also advised and counseled veterinary medicine students and served on numerous radiology resident committees.

Barber received his bachelor's degree and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California at Davis, and a master's degree from Colorado State.
