Patrice M. Weiss named chair Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
Dr. Patrice M. Weiss has been named chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
Weiss, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the medical school, also chairs the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Carilion Clinic.
"Patrice is an exceptional physician, academician, and innovator, and her many talents will augment the strength of our team," said Dr. Cynda Ann Johnson, founding dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. "Her appointment to Virginia Tech Carilion is exceptionally poignant now, as we open the medical school and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landmark report by Abraham Flexner, which led to the modernization of medical education."
Weiss is well known for her work in medical education, communication, and risk management and patient safety. She is a member of the board of directors of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and serves as chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists patient safety and quality improvement committee. In addition, she is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is an oral board examiner with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and also serves on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's obstetrics and gynecology residency review committee.

Prior to joining Carilion Clinic, Weiss served as vice chair of education, research, and academic compliance as well as residency program director at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pa. She was also the medical director of risk management for Lehigh Valley Physician Group.
Weiss received her medical degree from Hahnemann University (Drexel) School of Medicine where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical society and completed her residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital. She completed the Council of University Chairs of Obstetrics and Gynecology Fellowship in Academic Leadership.
