2009 Summer Session Grant Program awards announced

Fifteen of Virginia Tech faculty members have been awarded $5,000 to instruct courses during the 2009 summer sessions through the 2009 Provost Summer Grant Award Program.

In its third year, the grant was developed to enhance students’ learning, discovery, and engagement experiences. The University Summer Session Advisory Committee received several applications.

The following grant recipients were chosen by the committee (faculty and course name).

• Art Buikema, Alumni Distinguished Professor and Michael Rosenzweig, research scientist, BIOL 1105 and 1106: Principles of Biology, College of Science;

• James Collier, associate professor, ENGL 4814: Writing and Designing for the World Wide Web, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences;
• Clinton Dancey, associate professor, ME 3514: System Dynamics, College of Engineering;
• Tom Ewing, associate professor, HIST 3554: Age of Globalization, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences;
• Hayward Farrar, associate professor, HIST 2984: Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences;
• Joel Peters, associate professor, GIA 5984: Understanding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, School of Public and International Affairs;
• Barbara Reeves, instructor, HUM 1314: Enlightenment and Romanticism, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences;
• Richard Rich, professor, PSCI/UAP 3344: Global Environmental Issues, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences;
• Michael Saffle, professor, HUM 3024: Post Renaissance Humanities and the Arts, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences;
• Mark Schneider, assistant professor, ARCH 2984: Graphic Statics for Architects, College of Architecture and Urban Studies;
• Akshay Sharma, ARCH 1844: Drawing for Design, College of Architecture and Urban Studies;
• Laura Sjoberg, assistant professor, PSCI 1024: Introduction to Comparative Politics and PSCI 3616: International Law and Organizations, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences; and,
• Sophia Tambudzai-Anong, assistant professor, AHRM 2304: Family Financial Management, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
