Virginia Tech Sport Club teams will be supporting the community this year by collecting canned food donations for the Spiritual Roots Ministry Food Bank.

Located on South Main Street in Blacksburg, Va., the Spiritual Roots Ministry Food Bank has been distributing food twice a week to families in the New River Valley for nearly nine years.

Participating sports club teams are embodying Virginia Tech’s motto – Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) – by participating in the Hokies Help the Hungry Challenge. Support your favorite club team by bringing canned food to their home games throughout the season. Items will also be collected at the Sports Club Office in 125 War Memorial Hall, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Suggested items requested include meals in a box, breakfast items, cereal, soups, and any non-perishables. Sport Club teams participating in the Hokies Help the Hungry Challenge include: gymnastics, women’s water polo, fencing, women’s rugby, women’s lacrosse, cycling, and equestrian.

“We are pleased that a number of our sport clubs are taking part in the Hokies Help the Hungry Challenge,” says Alan Glick, assistant director of sport clubs and marketing at Virginia Tech. “We think it’s important that our sport clubs are concerned about and are involved with the local community.”

Top three participating sport clubs each semester will receive a monetary prize for their efforts. The first place team will receive $500 and will win the “Virginia Tech Sport Club Community Award.” The second place team will receive $250 and the third place team will receive $100.
