School of Performing Arts and Cinema announces speaker series events
The Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts and Cinema announces the second and third events in its new speaker series with author and artist Tom Igoe Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m. in Squires Studio Theatre and saxophonist and composer Tim Ries on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Squires Recital Salon.
All events are free and open to the public on a space available basis.
Tom Igoe will be speaking on "Fun with Physical Computing and Performance." Igoe teaches courses in physical computing and networking at New York University, exploring ways to allow digital technologies to sense and respond to a wider range of human physical expression. Coming from a background in theatre, his work centers on physical interaction related to live performance and public space. He has written "Making Things Talk."
He and Dan O'Sullivan co-authored the book "Physical Computing: Sensing and Controlling the Physical World with Computers." Both have been adopted by digital art and design programs around the world. Projects include a series of networked banquet table centerpieces and musical instruments; an e-mail clock; and a series of interactive dioramas, created in collaboration with M.R. Petit. He has consulted for The American Museum of the Moving Image, EAR Studio, Diller + Scofidio Architects, Eos Orchestra, and others.
Tim Ries will be speaking on "Funding the Arts Through Rock and Roll." Ries has performed and recorded with jazz and rock legends including Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman, Maynard Ferguson, the Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, Lyle Lovett, Sheryl Crow and Stevie Wonder. As a member of the saxophone quartet PRISM, he has performed William Bolcom's "Concerto Grosso" with over 13 major symphony orchestras including Dallas, Detroit and Cleveland. He has released five compact discs as a leader and written over one hundred compositions in both the jazz and classical idioms. Ries has served on the faculties of The New School, City College of New York, and the Mannes College of Music. He currently teaches saxophone and jazz at Rutgers University.
Squires Studio Theatre and Recital Salon are located in the Squires Student Center adjacent to downtown Blacksburg on College Avenue. Convenient parking for these events is available in the nearby Squires and Shultz Dining Hall parking lots.
