The Virginia Tech Licensing Department along with the University Bookstore on-campus and off-campus Volume Two Bookstore are asking Hokies around the world to lose their minds and go "crazy for the Hokies" beginning Monday, Sept. 1.

The theme of this year’s contest, called “Crazy for the Hokie Homes,” is to decorate their house in a manner that would make every Hokie in the neighborhood proud.

“The contest is open to any homeowner to decorate their home and yard with Hokie gear, logos, and colors in the wildest, most outlandish, craziest way possible. This might include a maroon front yard…’Let’s Go Hokies’ in giant letters on the roof…or even a colossal Hokie Bird painted on the driveway” said Locke White, director of licensing and trademark administration at Virginia Tech. “We’re asking Hokie fans to go all out and have fun with this but you cannot just put them up for a few hours and take them down. The decorations have to be up for at least three days and they have to be witnessed by a neighbor….or ex-neighbor!”

First prize is $5,000; second prize is $1,000; and $500 will be awarded for third prize. The judging will be based on three criteria:

  • The creativity and uniqueness of the logos and colors reproduced,
  • The size of the logos reproduced, and
  • The overall crazy Hokie appearance of the home.

Winners will be announced during halftime of the Virginia Tech versus University of Virginia football game Saturday, Nov. 29 at Lane Stadium. Winning entries will be shown on the JumboTron.

“We’re proud to sponsor this year’s Crazy for the Hokies contest this year,” said Don Williams, executive director of University Services Inc. “We see the most faithful of Hokie fans come into our stores every day, so we know there must be some homes across Virginia that glow orange and maroon. I can’t wait to see the entries.”

All entry forms and photos must be received by the Virginia Tech Licensing Department no later than Friday, Nov. 21. More guidelines to the contest and the official entry form may be found on the Virginia Tech University Bookstore website.

A color concept rendering of a decorated Hokie home is available by contacting White via e-mail.
